Protecting River Ruhezamyenda: A Community, Conservation, and Tourism Story from Bwindi.

Just beyond the balconies of Emirambi Gorilla Safari Lodge, a quiet river winds its way through rolling hills and deep valleys. From above, guests often pause to watch its gentle movement, cutting through the landscape as birds call from the papyrus and mist rises in the early morning light. This is River Ruhezamyenda - a lifeline flowing silently past our home.
River Ruhezamyenda stretches approximately 33 kilometres, beginning its journey from Lake Bunyonyi in Muko and eventually making its way to Lake Mutanda. Along this path, it passes through papyrus wetlands, farmlands, and villages, supporting ecosystems and communities that depend on its waters every day.

Understanding River Ruhezamyenda

Ruhezamyenda is more than a river; it is a connector. It links lakes, hills, people, and wildlife. Its papyrus swamps play a critical role in filtering water, controlling erosion, and providing habitat for birds and aquatic life. For generations, communities along its banks have relied on it for domestic water use, small-scale fishing, and agriculture.

Standing at Emirambi, watching the river meander through the valleys below, one quickly understands its quiet importance to this landscape.

A River Under Threat

Despite its significance, River Ruhezamyenda is increasingly under pressure. Farming activities have expanded closer to its banks, exposing the river to soil erosion and agricultural runoff. Livestock grazing - particularly cattle, goats, and sheep - within papyrus swamps has degraded sensitive wetland areas that naturally protect water quality.

In the past, environmental authorities restricted eucalyptus planting and farming along the riverbanks, recognizing the danger these activities pose. However, enforcement remains a challenge, and encroachment continues. Over time, these pressures threaten not only the river itself but also the communities and ecosystems that depend on it.

Why This River Matters

When a river is damaged, the effects are never isolated. Water quality declines. Wetlands disappear. Communities face unsafe water sources. Wildlife habitats shrink.

For a region that thrives on nature-based tourism and conservation - particularly near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park  - protecting rivers like Ruhezamyenda is essential. Clean water supports healthy ecosystems, sustainable livelihoods, and meaningful tourism experiences.

Emirambi’s Commitment to Conservation

At Emirambi Gorilla Safari Lodge, conservation is not an abstract idea—it is something we live with every day. River Ruhezamyenda flows beside us, visible from our cottages, shaping the land we call home. Protecting it is both a responsibility and a commitment.

As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Emirambi is working towards supporting the conservation and protection of River Ruhezamyenda, with a strong focus on promoting safe water and sustainable land use in the surrounding communities.

Conservation succeeds when communities benefit. Part of Emirambi’s vision is to encourage safe and sustainable activities along the river. Papyrus, for example, can be used for arts and crafts, providing income opportunities without destroying wetlands. By supporting such initiatives, communities can shift away from practices that degrade the river while still sustaining their livelihoods.

Looking ahead, River Ruhezamyenda holds potential for low-impact tourism activities such as canoeing and kayaking, offering visitors a deeper connection to the landscape while maintaining ecological balance. These experiences, when carefully managed, can create value for conservation and local communities alike.

Our hope is that Ruhezamyenda remains a river that future generations can depend on—a source of clean water, biodiversity, and inspiration.

A Shared Responsibility

Protecting River Ruhezamyenda is not the work of one lodge, one community, or one organization. It is a shared responsibility. At Emirambi Gorilla Safari Lodge, we are committed to playing our part - working with communities, partners, and guests to ensure that this river continues to flow clean and free.

As it winds its way from Lake Bunyonyi to Lake Mutanda, River Ruhezamyenda reminds us that conservation begins at home - and that even quiet rivers deserve a strong voice.

A Final Word: A Stay That Protects What Matters.

Choosing to stay at Emirambi Gorilla Safari Lodge is more than selecting a place to rest - it is a quiet but meaningful act of support. Every stay contributes to the protection of River Ruhezamyenda, the conservation of its fragile wetlands, and the promotion of safe water and sustainable livelihoods for the communities that live along its banks. By waking up to the sight of this river and becoming part of its story, our guests help us invest in conservation, empower local people, and safeguard a landscape that gives so much to both nature and humanity.
In choosing Emirambi, you become part of a shared responsibility - to protect the river, the hills, and the future they sustain.
